  • The advantages of series resonance in power systems

    The advantage of aseries resonant (also known as an AC withstand voltage test device)circuit is that it allows for the use of smaller capacitor values, and if the capacitors are matched with appropriate inductance and resistance values. A smaller capacitor value can be used to generate series resonance effect, and the smaller the capacitor, the more accurate the circuit. 


    For example, one-fifth of the common value of a capacitor requires a tolerance of about 10% for the capacitor and inductor components, and one tenth of the normal value of a capacitor requires a tolerance of ± 5%, and so on. It is difficult to achieve high-frequency inductors with such strict tolerances. If you think the layout inductance is fixed and plan a smaller capacitance value to place the series resonance point in the correct position. You will face the same difficulty: you cannot easily control the precise values of capacitors and inductors.

    Resonance must continue and repeat without interruption or space. If resonance stops, the resonant circuit will lose control and generate as much interference as the problem you are trying to alleviate. When resonance restarts, the resonant circuit will take multiple cycles to catch up with the opportunity to provide zero returns during that cycle. The resonant circuit is only useful under continuous excitation and cannot prevent noise generated by random data events.  


    You must place the series resonant circuit within a small portion of the wavelength of any device it protects, and within this limited radius, the extended inductance of the power and ground planes changes the effective series inductance of the resonant circuit. Therefore, the precise location of the resonant circuit is crucial. If a thorough redesign is not carried out, the layout cannot be changed. Worse still, resonant elements that provide substantial attenuation for resonant noise emitted from one location may not be beneficial and may even exacerbate noise from another location.  


    Finally, remember that resonant circuits only attenuate noise at one frequency, and at other harmonics of the resonant rate, it has little to do with it in sine wave based systems. Like FM or AM radios, resonant power components can provide truly amazing benefits.  


    In digital systems that start and stop at various clock speeds and constantly change layout from one version to another, the use of resonant power filter components cannot pass testing. Many large, simple, and resonant free bypass capacitors can better serve digital power systems.
